The Denver Broncos acquired veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater from the Carolina Panthers shortly before this year’s NFL Draft to push 2019 draft selection Drew Lock and, potentially, to win the upcoming summer competition between the two if Lock shows minimal or no improvement from last season.
Head coach Vic Fangio spoke with reporters on Friday and suggested both men will have equal opportunities to win QB1 honors.
“Maybe I’ll flip a coin to see who takes the absolute first snap of the offseason and training camp,” Fangio said, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “But by the end of the day, meaning the end of training camp before those guys make the decision for us with their play, it’s going to be a 50-50 proposition. Some days, a guy might get more than the other. It’ll even out the next day, or two days later. It’s not going to be 50-50, probably, every day. But over the course of this offseason and training camp, it will be.”
Earlier this week, BetOnline.ag listed the Broncos as the favorites to trade for unsettled Green Bay Packers signal-caller Aaron Rodgers ahead of the regular season. Without realizing it, Bridgewater and Lock may truly be competing to see who starts for Green Bay ahead of 2020 rookie Jordan Love this fall as Love continues to learn the NFL game from the sidelines.
