Brisbane Broncos flyer Xavier Coates has suffered a concussion while crossing for a brilliant sideline try.
The Queensland Maroons weapon bagged his second try of the night to extend Brisbane’s lead to 14-0 in the 32nd minute, but he ended up in a very concerning state after colliding with Clint Gutherson.
“We’ve had an almighty faceplant,” rugby league legend Brad Fittler said on Nine’s coverage.
“It was an incredible, spectacular, one-handed leap into the sky and he’s come down flush on his face.”
Nine commentator Peter Psaltis added: “That hurts just watching it. He’s in a fair bit of pain, Xavier Coates.”
Nine sideline reporter Danika Mason confirmed Coates’ concussion at half-time and said he had appeared to be in a terrible condition when taken to the change-rooms.
“Xavier Coates has injured his neck and has suffered a concussion,” Mason said.
“He was on the verge of being physically ill as he walked past the sidelines.”
Mason then reported during the second half that Coates had been taken to hospital in a precautionary move.
