“They’ve gotta have big, deep pockets”.

I’m not talking about what I’m looking for in a potential boyfriend, I’m talking about leggings.

For too many years, I’ve spent too much time trying to jam an iPhone 8/9/10/11 Pro (which, let’s be honest is almost the size of an iPad mini) into a tiny pocket on my backside while out for a run while juggling a pair of AirPods, a handful of keys and questionable amount of motivation for said run at the same time.

But finally activewear brands are taking notice of this enduring activewear injustice and are starting to sew big ol’ deep pockets into their tights.

Cult Aussie fitness brand Nimble were among the first activewear companies to recognise that because a girl doesn’t go anywhere without her phone, she needs somewhere handy to put it. Game-changing right?

“Nimble launched our first pair of leggings with a ‘phone-friendly’ pocket in 2019 with the belief that our customers would quietly rejoice in the convenience of this functional feature,” Nimble Activewear co-founder, Katia Santilli told bodyandsoul.com.au.

“Now we’re finding that one of the biggest priorities for our customers is having phone pockets in our leggings and shorts.”

It was such a stroke of genius, they quickly integrated searchability based on this functionality into their online shopping experience and have even called their latest legging style (which dropped only this week) the Hold The Phone Legging.

“Last year, in response to this increasing demand, Nimble launched our dedicated “Fits A Phone” Collection online to help our customers easily find what they are looking for, so that you never have to worry about adventuring out in activewear without your phone safely stored again,” added Katia.

Butter Butter – an Aussie activewear label started by two women motivated by COVID redundancies – also realised this was a must-have feature in the athleisure label they launched in December.

Their butter-soft Go-To leggings (which have just launched Series TWO) feature the BEST pockets and quickly became the brand’s most popular sold-out product.

“One of the most common pain points was having nowhere to store smart devices and keys without having to hold onto them, when connected to audio or on the go” says Elle, former PR Manager at Foreo, who started the brand with her business partner (who was the former Program Lead at The U.N, no less).

“Many women have said that once they experienced the convenience of pocket leggings, they weren’t able to look back.”

LSKD, a Brisbane brand who has seen their turnover jump from $3.3m in 2018-19 to make $50m this calendar year are also on board the pocket train.

Their Momentum 7/8 Tights feature a pocket so deep you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them, with almost their entire range of leggings featuring the handy feature.

Given a 4.9 star rating from 1800+ verified reviews, the Rep Tights which feature the same deep pockets and body contouring panels are also a winner.

(Oh and did we mention Zac Efron has been seen wearing the LSKD brand around Byron). Need we say more.
