Eighth Immortal Andrew Johns and NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler see Broncos recruit Albert Kelly as the long-term option to partner Adam Reynolds in the halves.
The Broncos played a high energy, up tempo style in attack against the Roosters last week, with Kelly providing what Walters described as a “backyard style” of football, to complement the toughness and enthusiasm of Tyson Gamble.
With Gamble on the sidelines, Anthony Milford will tonight partner Kelly against the Storm in what will be Brisbane’s sixth halves combination of the season.
But league legends Johns and Fittler believe Walters may have just stumbled on his five-eighth for the future.
It throws up a tricky situation for gun youngster Kotoni Staggs who recently signed a monster $2.8 million contract to remain at Red Hill. With that price-tag you’d think the Broncos’ salary allocation was a bit misplaced.
But according Johns and Fittler, Kelly is the one to partner Reynolds when the Rabbitoh arrives next season.
“I’ve got to say, Albert Kelly was extremely impressive,” Fittler told Wide World of Sports’ Freddy and the Eighth.
“Really happy with the way he went. I like him. He’s a footy player.”
Johns added: “He can play, that’s the thing. He gets the ball in his hands and just goes at them.”
As for Staggs, for now it appears he will be pigeon-holed to the centres.
“I haven’t seen Kotoni as a five-eighth. I’ve only ever seen him as a centre,” Johns said.
Fittler added: “He’s a better centre I think.”
