After a video of a senior citizen lying unattended at the gate of King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai went viral, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Saturday expelled two health workers who have been held responsible.

The incident took place on Friday night. Manish Raul, a resident of Parel where the hospital is located, saw two ward boys leaving the patient on the road. According to Raul, the patient was alive, without a mask and could not walk. He took a video of the patient lying outside Gate Number 6 (mortuary gate) of the hospital.

After some time, Raul shot another video of two ward boys taking the patient inside the hospital from the mortuary gate.

According to the clarification issued by the BMC-run hospital, the unidentified patient was referred to a surgeon on the ground floor but was left outside the hospital instead. Both the contractual staff members who were captured committing this act of negligence in the CCTV footage have been dismissed. They were served a show cause notice for breach of duty.

HOSPITAL’S STATEMENT

The hospital’s statement said, “The patient had been admitted to KEM Hospital for treatment. He was under the care of a resident doctor He was suffering from abdominal pain and was directed to be referred to the ESR on the ground floor of the new building for consultation with a surgeon. For this, two multi-purpose health workers were sent along.”

“However, after some time, a citizen filmed the incident and brought it to the notice of the security guards of the hospital. The patient was immediately re-admitted and given the necessary treatment,” the statement continued.

The hospital stated that no malpractice is tolerated in its medical tradition and those who violate their duty will face appropriate administrative action. “The KEM Hospital administration is always committed to providing the best patient care,” they said.

The KEM hospital also stated that more than 6,500 Covid patients have been admitted for treatment over the last year. Of these, many were admitted in critical condition. Hundreds of patients are also admitted for other diseases. Necessary treatment is tirelessly being given to each patient, the hospital claimed.
