After being halted for a year and a half due to the pandemic, New York Fashion Week was a much-needed celebration of the top innovative and creative designers, rife with exciting wins and notable moments. Chief among them was model Quannah Chasinghorse‘s NYFW debut.

Quannah, a Teen Vogue “21 under 21” alum, closed Prabal Gurung’s show in a show-stopping green and pink feather dress. “Mahsi’choo (thank you very much) for my first @nyfw runway show ever!” she wrote on Instagram after the momentous occasion. “I had so much fun and I LOVED this dress!” Ahead of NYFW, Quannah also partook in the Future of Fashion Summit talks in the city.

In addition to her modeling work, 19-year-old Quannah — whose ancestry is Han Gwich’in and Oglala Lakota — is also a climate change activist, working with organizations like Gwich’in Youth Council. Her Indigenous background drives her passion for change, and she strives to both amplify representation and fix the environmental harm done to her communities.

“I grew up learning [about] my Indigenous traditions, cultures, and [being] grounded in my values,” she told Teen Vogue last fall. “I was also raised in the movement, listening and watching my mom and aunties always working so hard protecting our peoples, lands, waters, and way of life.”

Quannah represents a new generation of top models who combine advocacy, representation, and activism with fashion. They are utilizing their voices to the best of their abilities, both on Capitol Hill and on the runways of NYFW and, hopefully, beyond. After a more than successful runway debut, we can’t wait to see what else this young trailblazer has in store in the future.
