r/femalefashionadvice – Multiples, Units and a Hostile Takeover of a Clothing Designer’s Business

Can I give advice in a thread instead of asking for it? My advice is to buy stuff like this!

In the 80s, JCP started selling a clothing line called UNITS. It was wildly popular for a hot minute, then it was gone. I got a set in a dark purple color and was saving my babysitting $ for more when the issue went to court.

Here’s an article about it. https://gothamist.com/arts-entertainment/meet-the-creator-of-the-greatest-1980s-modular-clothing

This designer basically created multi-purpose clothes you could layer to make different looks–a cowl that can be worn as a skirt or tube top, etc. The concept is comfort and really using the clothes you buy in cool ways instead of just throwing them out.

The article discusses the hostile takeover of her company and how she fought it. That’s why it was out of the mass market so quickly.

In early 2020, I decided I was done wearing stiff pants due to surgery, and remembered UNITS. I tracked down the original designer. She was still making her classic stuff, made to order, on a small scale. She did a beautiful job. The fabric is fab, and the hems are all that zigzag stitch that really holds it together.

I really wish this stuff would go back on the market. It seems like the fabric could be somewhat sustainable and the pieces are versatile enough to reduce the need to own so many different pieces of clothing.
