Disclaimer for you + the mods: I promise this is not an ad, but I would sell my soul for Rit.

Hello team! The other day I saw a comment here exasperated by the lack of color available in clothing currently.

Something that I do fairly often (with straight fabric or finished items) is (drum roll please) RIT DYE!

I use this more often for costumes where I need specific colors, but in today’s case, I found a great deal on a cute puff sleeved sweater and it was in the singular worst color for my skin tone.

They have this page to help you find the colors you need to get your desired color. They also have color remover (fair warning this will depend on how the fabric was dyed but should work) so you can go to a lighter/different color. In my case, I’m going from light tan to camel, so I can just dye over the existing color.

If you decide to embark on this colorful journey, I recommend starting with something you can accept losing because it is nerve-wracking (I once dyed a very expensive linen dress and was sweating) but as long as you use a large bucket and make sure you “swish” the fabric enough, and the water is hot of course, you’ll find it’s hard to mess up.

Also make sure you choose the right one – they have an all-purpose for most things but if it has a certain percentage of polyester you need their synthetic dye. The site I linked gives you specifics.

Anyway I hope this is useful to some of you, if anything it’s definitely fun!

Edit: as /u/cattiemount says below, all-purpose dye may not work on the threads of a garment (they’re often poly blend even if the garment isn’t). Which could be a fun effect, but keep that in mind if there’s a lot of stitching you were hoping would match. The synthetic dye would work though.
