She’s overcome enormous hurdles to run again, and now she’s helping Australians find their inner ‘get up and go’.

Turia Pitt’s love affair with running started early in life. “As a kid, I used to go for runs with my dad along the beach,” Pitt tells

Body+Soul. “I was never particularly good, but always enjoyed it.”

The athlete and author shares her tips on how to start your own running journey.

#1 Kiss your ego goodbye

This may mean a walker overtakes you, or your fastest run is slower than a toddler’s. That’s OK.

#2 Stick to a plan

An easy 15-minute run should be just that – easy. You should be able to hold a conversation about your garden gnomes while you run.

#3 Get a mate

Or a group or a coach. They’re very helpful when you don’t want to run.

#4 Be consistent

It’s OK to miss training or if you were too tired to finish a session. If you train most days, you’ll see results.

#5 Breathing

Focusing on taking deep breaths will help you maintain good form and keep your abdominal muscles engaged.

#6 Prioritise your run

Set aside time in the day for your run, otherwise that time will get eaten up by someone or something else. Let your run take priority over doing the dishes, folding laundry or cooking dinner.

The three essentials

A new kit, sweat-wicking socks and supersonic headphones are great but they’re not necessary. Here’s what you actually need…

Running shoes

“All you really need to start running is a good pair of shoes,” Pitt says. “You can start in whatever you have at home, but if you want to protect your feet and avoid injury, spring for a new (and professionally fitted) pair.”

A sports bra

“To keep the girls in their place,” Pitt adds. “If you’re well-endowed (you lucky thing!) get fitted for one.”

A positive attitude

“Don’t hate me for this one, but it’s probably the most important thing on this list,” Pitt explains. “Work on being kind and saying things to yourself like, ‘This is tough but I’m sticking to it,’ and ‘Damn my butt looks good in these tights.’”

Turia Pitt’s online program RUN With Turia costs $249; sign-ups open June 10, and the program launches June 21. For details or to sign up, visit turiapitt.com/run.
