Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jesse Winker is enjoying a breakout season and was named to his first National League All-Star squad earlier this year but has encountered a bit of a speed bump ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Chicago Cubs.

Per an ESPN piece, Reds manager David Bell confirmed Monday that Winker has been placed on the 10-day injured list with an intercostal strain that kept him out of a pair of games against the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend and caused him to be pulled from Sunday’s matchup after he recorded only two at-bats.

Bell added an MRI seemed to confirm the problem won’t be “a long-term issue.”

In a corresponding roster move, Cincinnati recalled infielder Jose Barrero from Triple-A Louisville. According to the MLB website, Barrero is the Reds’ No. 4 prospect.

Winker hits the IL batting .307 with 24 home runs and 71 RBI. Per ESPN stats, he is tied for second in the big leagues with 32 doubles.

The Reds begin Monday evening at 64-55 and in second place in the NL Central standings, eight games back of the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.
