New York, N.Y. — On Tuesday, Israeli civilians once again found themselves on the receiving end of over one thousand rockets fired by Hamas, the Islamic terrorist organization that has held control of the Gaza strip since 2007 under the sole objective of dismantling the Jewish state.
While retaliatory action taken by Israel has so far proven largely successful, five have been reported dead and over a hundred wounded since the airstrikes commenced early Tuesday morning. At least thirty Palestinians were also killed in counterstrikes – however, this is tragically common in airstrikes against Hamas, whose military operations are often conducted in civilian areas to complicate any offensive action taken by Israel and maximize the number of civilian casualties as a result.
This, however, goes relatively ignored by those on the left and in mainstream media, who prefer to run headlines about casualties caused by Israeli rocket fire whilst labeling any and all military action by Israel as acts of genocidal aggression against hapless victims of colonialism.
A prime example of this came after leading New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang (D-N.Y.) publicly expressed solidarity with the Israeli government, when #YangSupportsGenocide promptly trended on Twitter.
And in what is perhaps an even more telling gesture, a growing number House Democrats have come out in support of H.R. 2590, a House resolution which endorses the prohibition of the Israeli military from using any funds received from the U.S. government in a number of its endeavors. The resolution, introduced by Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) and co-sponsored by eighteen voting members of the House of Representatives, including every member of “the Squad”, states its objective as being:
“To promote and protect the human rights of Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation and to ensure that United States taxpayer funds are not used by the Government of Israel to support the military detention of Palestinian children, the unlawful seizure, appropriation, and destruction of Palestinian property and forcible transfer of civilians in the West Bank, or further annexation of Palestinian land in violation of international law.”
This, by nature, is quite treacherous, given the vagueness of the resolution’s terms. “Annexation in violation of international law”, in particular, seems to take on whatever definition may suit Israel’s critics at any given moment. More often than not, this translates to things like Israel’s construction of settlements in the West Bank – a far cry from the grandiose descriptions of grave human rights abuses made by proponents of this breed of policy.
In addition to its basis in blatant deception, this line of thinking being promoted on the left also caters directly to the narrative being pushed forward by Hamas. Hamas thrives on the characterization of Palestine as simply another victim of Western aggression on behalf of Israel, and creating a caricature of the Jewish state as being an unjust, reprehensible presence in the Middle East with no moral or legal mandate for its existence.
Again, to suggest that this is somewhat reflective of the characterization of the Israeli government echoed by the progressive wing of the Democratic Party is a vast understatement.
This, combined with the notion being actively promoted by Democrats that any line of defense by the Israeli government – or any other course of action by Israel other than outright concession being taken – is to be seen as an act of undue aggression, is patently insane and anti-Semitic on its face. There is no evidence to suggest that conceding to Hamas is going to stop the rockets from coming – it was a policy failure in the past when Israel ceded military control of the Gaza strip to them, and will continue to be a policy failure regardless of how fervently it is pushed forward by those with no intent to promote Israeli welfare or any real form of coherent policy in the Middle East.
